The Discipline of Dismay

"Trusting His steps even when the path ahead is hidden."

In my journey of faith, there inevitably comes a moment when I realize that following Jesus doesn't always match the image I had when I first embraced Him. Initially, it was exhilarating and clear; everything felt exciting and filled with purpose. I readily abandoned all else to chase after Him, confident in my understanding of who He is. But there comes a point where I find Jesus leading in ways I didn’t anticipate, toward destinations that seem uncertain and challenging. At such moments, a new realization hits—I don't fully grasp His ways or fully comprehend His thoughts. There's a sobering distance as He strides purposefully ahead, resolutely facing a path I wouldn't naturally choose.

Oswald Chambers calls this unsettling experience the "discipline of dismay," an essential aspect of being a true disciple. This discipline involves those moments when Jesus' leading confronts my expectations, shaking my confidence in my knowledge of Him. I might find myself feeling bewildered, wondering where He's going and why He doesn't pause to explain. Jesus moves ahead with determined steps, not because He's distant or uncaring, but because He sees what I cannot yet see—He moves intentionally toward the very purpose for which He came, facing every depth of sin and sorrow humanity experiences.

This experience is crucial because it reveals how little my finite mind truly comprehends the vast, eternal purposes of Christ. Chambers warns me not to manufacture my own comfort or solutions when the darkness of confusion and uncertainty surrounds me. Instead, I am invited to simply trust—to embrace the discomfort and uncertainty and remain anchored solely in the character and faithfulness of God. Through this discipline, my faith is refined, purified from mere sentimentality and shallow familiarity. Ultimately, it leads to a deeper, richer experience of joy as I learn to follow Jesus more authentically, even through dismay.

I choose today to trust fully in Your loving wisdom and to rest confidently in Your faithful guidance. You see the path clearly even when I cannot. Thank You for the grace You've already poured into my life, and for the joy that You promise will overflow as I follow Jesus step by step through every season, even those marked by temporary dismay.
