Rediscovering Majesty: A Journey Into the Knowledge of the Holy
In his preface to The Knowledge of the Holy penned in 1961, A.W. Tozer lays out a sobering truth: the modern Church has largely lost its sense of God's majesty. He describes this loss not as a deliberate rebellion, but as a subtle drift—a gradual diminishing of our concept of who God truly is.
This drift has had tragic consequences. Tozer rightfully notes that without a proper understanding of God’s greatness, we lose our sense of awe, our spirit of worship, and even our ability to experience life in the Spirit. As he writes:
"The Church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshipping men."
A Low View of God, A Shallow Walk of Faith
Reading Tozer’s preface, as mentioned in previous posts, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own journey. For years, my view of God was quite limited—not because I doubted His existence, but because I unknowingly confined Him to a framework I could understand. I saw Him as a somewhat distant figure, holy yet manageable—like the old man on the throne with the robe and flowing white beard. While my concept of God wasn’t irreverent, it lacked what I have since discovered: the grandeur and magnificence that comes with knowing Him as infinite, eternal, and utterly sovereign.
Tozer’s words struck me deeply:
"It is impossible to keep our moral practices sound and our inward attitudes right while our idea of God is erroneous or inadequate."
If we lose sight of God’s majesty, how can we truly trust Him? How can we fully worship Him? Tozer’s call to “rediscover the majesty of God” is not just an intellectual exercise—it’s an invitation to transformation.
The Call to Rediscover Majesty
What stood out to me most in Tozer’s preface is his hope for personal renewal. He wasn’t writing for scholars or theologians, though his work rests on sound theological ground. He was writing for people like you and me—ordinary believers longing to encounter the living God.
His desire wasn’t to impress but to inspire:
"Should a few persons by reading it be encouraged to begin the practice of reverent meditation on the being of God, that will more than repay the labor required to produce it."
This resonates deeply with me, and I’ve found it to be true. Rediscovering God’s beautiful majesty isn’t about striving for a deeper faith; it’s about letting the truth of who God is transform our hearts and minds. Tozer emphasizes that the remedy for spiritual dryness is not found in more effort on our part but in returning to the source—a clearer, truer vision of God.
Living in the Majesty of God
For those of us walking in the exchanged life, this rediscovery isn’t something we accomplish through human effort. It’s about resting in the truth of our union with Christ and allowing His Spirit to reveal the fullness of God’s character to us. When we meditate on God’s attributes—His infinity, faithfulness, goodness, and love—it’s not just a mental exercise; it’s an act of worship that stirs our hearts and renews our faith.
The majesty of God isn’t a concept to be grasped; it’s a reality to be lived. As we abide in Christ, the Holy Spirit teaches us, moment by moment, what it means to walk in awe, trust, and joyful surrender. This God, who is infinite in His power and love, can most certainly be trusted with every aspect of our lives.
A Prayer of Praise and Thanksgiving
Lord, we stand in awe of Your majesty, holiness, and infinite love. Thank You for revealing Yourself to us—not as a distant figure, but as the God who dwells within us through Christ. Thank You that we don’t have to strive to understand You but can rest in the truth that Your Spirit continually teaches us.
We praise You for being more than we could ever imagine: self-existent, eternal, unchanging, and faithful. May the truth of who You are stir our hearts to worship and draw us deeper into relationship with You. Thank You for making Yourself known and for inviting us to live in the abundance of Your presence. Amen.
