Not “How?” – But “What?”
Inspired by insights from Abide Above
"And God is able to make all grace abound toward you."
—2 Corinthians 9:8
Imagine a child on a long journey with their father. The father has already prepared every detail—packed the bags, mapped the route, and planned the stops. The child might wonder, How will we get there? What if something goes wrong?Yet the father simply asks the child to trust him, reminding them, "I’ve got it all covered."
This is the heart of today’s passage. As believers, we often waste energy on how God will accomplish His promises instead of resting in the certainty of what He has promised. Our Father has made it clear: He is able to make all grace abound toward us.
What He Has Promised Is Certain
God’s Word has never failed, nor will it ever. Like Joshua declaring at the end of his life, “Not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you” (Joshua 23:14), we, too, can trust that every promise is secure.
Delays in seeing the fulfillment of God’s promises are not denials; they are opportunities for us to honor Him by our steadfast trust. While those new in faith may see quick answers, those maturing in faith will often experience the refining work of waiting. In that waiting, we testify to the world that God’s Word is certain, even when we cannot see how it will unfold.
Resting in What, Not How
God’s promises are as unshakable as His character. He has already declared that every promise in Christ is “Yes” and “Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Instead of trying to figure out how His grace will sustain us in a trial, we can focus on whatHe has promised:
He will never leave us (Hebrews 13:5).
He will complete the good work He began in us (Philippians 1:6).
His grace is sufficient, and His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).
It’s not our job to determine the method or timing of His work. It is our privilege to rest in His faithfulness.
A Prayer of Confidence
Father,
Thank You for Your unshakable promises, which You have already fulfilled in Christ. I trust in the certainty of Your Word, knowing that You are able to make all grace abound toward me. I rest in what You have said, confident that Your plans are good and that You will bring them to completion. May my life reflect steadfast trust in You, honoring You in every delay and trial. You are faithful, and I rest in that truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Final Thought
As we walk through life’s journey, let us be like the trusting child who simply holds the Father’s hand, knowing that every promise He has made will come to pass. We need not ask how—only rest in the truth of what He has already spoken. His grace abounds, always.
