No Power From Below Can Separate Us from Christ

"To the teaching and to the testimony! The light of Christ has already dawned." (Isaiah 8:20)

(A Reflection on E. Stanley Jones' In Christ)

Jones’ devotional today challenges the idea that a "power from below" can separate us from the love of God in Christ. He identifies spiritualism—attempting to connect with the dead—as a practice that leads people away from Christ rather than toward Him. He does not argue whether such communication is possible, but he emphasizes that no true revelation, wisdom, or moral insight has ever come from such sources. Isaiah’s warning remains relevant: "Should not a people consult their God?" (Isaiah 8:19-20). The wisdom of God, revealed in Christ and the Scriptures, is the only true source of light. Seeking guidance elsewhere leads only to confusion and darkness, for "there is no dawn" in such practices.

Jones makes a critical point: nothing that comes from below—no earthly philosophy, no spiritual force, no human wisdom—can add to what we already have in Christ. He is our revelation, our wisdom, and our life. To turn to other sources is to seek what has already been abundantly given in Him.

Journal Reflection

Father, You have given me all I need in Christ. Why would I ever look elsewhere for wisdom, guidance, or truth? You have not left me in the dark, searching for meaning among whispers and shadows. The world chases after mysteries, but in Christ, the mystery has been revealed—the fullness of God dwelling in Him, now dwelling in me.

There is nothing hidden from me that I need to discover outside of Your Word and Spirit. The deep longing within every person for truth and security is fully answered in Christ. The world is filled with empty voices promising secret knowledge, enlightenment, or power, yet they offer only confusion and deception. You have made it clear—truth is not found in the voices of the dead or the wisdom of this age, but in the One who is the Living Word.

You have placed Your Spirit within me, the very presence of Christ, guiding, teaching, and renewing my mind daily. There is no need for me to search elsewhere, for I have already been given the mind of Christ. Why would I seek a candle in the darkness when I live in the brilliance of Your light?

Lord, I rest in the security of Your love, knowing that no power—above, below, or anywhere in creation—can ever separate me from You. You are my wisdom, my understanding, my source of life. Let my heart be ever fixed on You, drawing only from the wellspring of truth that is Christ in me.

Closing Prayer

Father, I trust in You alone. You have revealed all I need in Christ, and I am complete in Him. I rejoice that no power from above, below, or anywhere else can separate me from Your love. Thank You for the clarity of Your truth, for the certainty of Your guidance, and for the indwelling presence of Christ, who leads me in the way everlasting. Amen.
