🕊️ The Didache – Chapter 12: Reception of Christians
“Receive everyone who comes in the name of the Lord… but with discernment.”
Chapter 12 outlines how the early Church was to welcome those claiming to follow Christ. Hospitality was expected, but not without wisdom. If someone came needing temporary help, they were to be assisted for a few days. But if they stayed longer, they should contribute through honest work rather than live in idleness. Those who refused to work were labeled as “Christ-mongers”—individuals using the name of Christ for personal gain. This chapter reminds us that grace and truth walk hand in hand: we are to be generous with what we’ve received, but also discerning so that our kindness is not misused.
Journal Entry – Voice of the Holy Spirit
My child, I have called you to be open-hearted—but not open to deception. Love always welcomes, but love also discerns. When someone comes in My name, I will guide you. Look not only at their words, but at their walk. Are they willing to serve, or are they only seeking to be served?
Your generosity is never wasted when it is done unto Me. But I have not asked you to carry what I have not given. If someone lives off others without willingness to labor or share, they do not reflect My Spirit. Let your heart remain generous, but your spirit discerning.
I am the One who provides for the stranger and the sojourner—and sometimes I will do so through you. Trust Me to show you who is passing through and who is planting roots. Whether for a moment or a season, let them see Me in your welcome.
(2 Thessalonians 3:10–12, Romans 12:13, 1 Peter 4:9–10, Matthew 10:40–42)
Prayer of Trust and Confidence
Father, thank You for welcoming me in Christ—not temporarily, but eternally. I trust You to guide me in showing hospitality to others. Let me be generous without fear, and discerning without judgment. You are the One who brings people into my life. I rest in Your Spirit to show me when to open my hands, and when to set healthy boundaries. Let all I do reflect Your wisdom and love. Amen.
