Transformed by Beholding
Inspired by insights from Oswald Chambers’ "My Utmost for His Highest"
"And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit."
— 2 Corinthians 3:18
A Christian’s life is like a still, clear pond reflecting the majesty of the sky above. When the surface is undisturbed, it mirrors the heavens perfectly. But if the waters are agitated—by distractions, anxieties, or misplaced priorities—the reflection becomes blurred. So it is with us: when our gaze is fixed on Christ, we reflect His character and glory to others.
Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that transformation happens not by striving, but by beholding. It is in the simple yet profound act of looking at Jesus, through the Word and by the Spirit, that we are changed into His likeness. Like a mirror, we don’t generate the light; we simply reflect it as we behold Him.
But how often do we allow the distractions of life to ripple across the surface of our souls, distorting the reflection of Christ in us? The good things—work, responsibilities, even service—can become the enemies of the best thing: a life fixed on Jesus. Our calling is to keep the waters of our soul calm and our gaze unwavering, prioritizing time in His presence above all else.
This beholding is not passive. It requires intentionality—setting aside the rush and clamor of life to focus entirely on Him. It means saying "no" to lesser things so that we can say "yes" to the One who is everything. And as we do, the Spirit works in us, transforming us into the image of Christ with ever-increasing glory.
Let’s not underestimate the power of simply gazing at Jesus, for it is in this act that we are renewed, restored, and made into His likeness.
A Prayer of Confidence in His Transforming Work
Father,
Thank You for the privilege of beholding Your glory through Christ. I rest in the truth that as I fix my gaze on You, Your Spirit works to transform me into Your likeness. You have already given me everything I need for life and godliness, and I trust in the sufficiency of Your Spirit to complete the good work You’ve begun in me. May my life remain undisturbed by the distractions of this world so that I reflect Your glory clearly and consistently. I rejoice in Your faithfulness to do what You’ve promised, and I abide in Your presence with confidence and peace. Amen.
Final Thought
Like a calm pond reflecting the sky, your life is most radiant when it mirrors Christ. Keep your eyes on Him, and trust His Spirit to do the transforming work. As you behold, you become.
