Who is Like Our God? A Glimpse into the Life of Joan

“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?”
—Isaiah 40:12

Joan scrolled through her X feed, her heart tightening with each headline. Another executive order bypassing Congress. Another news report hinting at government overreach. Another commentator warning that the Constitution was hanging by a thread.

Her mind raced. What will happen to our country? What kind of world will my children and grandchildren inherit?

She fired off a response in frustration, arguing with a stranger over the trajectory of the nation. A rush of indignation surged through her. The stakes were too high to remain silent! If enough people woke up—if they just understood—perhaps things could turn around.

But deep down, fear gnawed at her soul. And fear never leads to rest.

God’s View Above the Storm

The book of Isaiah reminds us of something we often forget: God is not pacing in heaven, wringing His hands over political trends. He is the One who weighs the mountains on a scale. He is the One who holds the nations in the palm of His hand. While leaders come and go, while governments rise and fall, He remains unshaken.

Joan was responding in the flesh, just as any natural person would—gripped by the illusion of control, believing the fate of the world rested on human decisions. But Christ, living within her, was inviting her to respond in a different way.

Instead of reacting in fear, she could rest in trust. Instead of being consumed by every alarming headline, she could dwell on the unshakable kingdom of God. Instead of seeing politics as the ultimate battlefield, she could remember that the real war is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12).

A New Response: Trusting in Christ

What would it look like for Joan to respond in union with Christ?

  • She would still care about truth and justice—but without being ruled by fear.

  • She would pray for leaders knowing that God raises up kings and brings them down (Daniel 2:21).

  • She would engage wisely, but not anxiously.

  • She would rest in the sovereignty of God, trusting that His purposes extend far beyond what any human government can accomplish.

God does not call us to ignore the world. He calls us to live in it as ambassadors of a greater kingdom (2 Corinthians 5:20). The United States, like every nation before it, is temporary. But the reign of Christ is eternal.

A Single Image to Consider

Imagine an experienced captain navigating a ship through a fierce storm. The winds howl, the waves threaten, yet—he remains steady. Why? Because he trusts the One who commands the seas. The same hands that measured the oceans in Isaiah 40:12 still hold them today.

Reflection Questions

  1. How much of your time and energy is spent worrying about things beyond your control?

  2. How does remembering God’s sovereignty change the way you see political and global events?

  3. Are you living as an ambassador of heaven, or are you trying to preserve an earthly kingdom?

Prayer

Father, You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. You rule over the nations, and no leader rises or falls apart from Your sovereign hand. I refuse to be shaken by the temporary turmoil of this world, knowing that Your kingdom is unshakable. Thank You for the peace that comes from trusting You fully. I rest in Your perfect wisdom, knowing that all things are working according to Your eternal plan. Amen.
