The Importance of Watchfulness in Prayer
"Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak." – Matthew 26:41
In today’s devotional from Days of Heaven on Earth, A.B. Simpson invites us to consider the importance of wisdom and discernment in our prayers. It’s not enough to simply pray; we must also ensure that our prayers align with God’s promises and guidance. Misguided prayers can lead to disillusionment and even spiritual darkness, as Simpson illustrates through the story of his friend.
The Pitfall of Misguided Prayers
Simpson recounts the story of a friend who spent years in spiritual darkness because of unanswered prayers. This friend had prayed earnestly for things that God had not promised, leading to frustration and near unbelief. It was only when Simpson helped this friend see that the prayers were misaligned with God’s Word that they experienced deliverance from the cloud of doubt.
This story reminds us that prayer is not about bending God’s will to fit our desires; it’s about aligning our desires with His will. When our prayers stray from God’s promises, we risk falling into disappointment and spiritual stagnation.
Acting on the Light We’ve Been Given
Sometimes, the answer to our prayers is not a sign or miraculous intervention but the wisdom to act on what God has already revealed. As Simpson says, we may not need more light to discern God’s will; instead, we need the courage to take the steps He has already illuminated. When we faithfully act on what we know, God often provides further guidance as we go.
This echoes the principle of walking by faith. God does not always show us the entire path, but He gives us enough light for the next step. Trusting Him in those moments of uncertainty deepens our relationship with Him and strengthens our faith.
A Prayer for Discernment and Trust
Lord, thank You for the gift of prayer and the privilege of bringing my heart before You. Guard me from misguided prayers that lead to disappointment, and guide my desires to align with Your will. Grant me wisdom to act on the light You have already given and faith to trust You for what lies ahead. May my prayers be marked by watchfulness, discernment, and a deep confidence in Your perfect plan. Amen.
