Union, Not Attainment

“It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.” — 1 Corinthians 1:30 BSB
So many approach the Christian life as if climbing a ladder to holiness, striving for righteousness as though it were a distant peak to be conquered. They make progress, only to stumble, rising again with renewed effort—until exhaustion sets in. Eventually, some collapse under the weight of their repeated failures, resigning themselves to the belief that sanctification is beyond their grasp.
But Scripture does not call us to attain holiness; it calls us to abide in the One who is holiness. Sanctification is not a goal to reach but a Person to know. Christ Himself is our righteousness, our holiness, and our redemption. He is not giving us a separate resource of holiness apart from Himself; He is that holiness, already dwelling within every believer.
Imagine a branch straining to bear fruit on its own, apart from the vine. No matter how much it tries, it remains barren. Yet, when it remains connected, the life of the vine flows through it naturally, producing what it could never achieve through effort. This is the difference between striving and abiding.
The key to lasting transformation is not self-effort or cycles of rededication, but a settled trust in Christ within. He is our life. Instead of pursuing sanctification as if it were a prize to win, we simply yield, recognizing that the fullness of holiness is already present in Him.
Reflection
Have you ever viewed holiness as something to achieve rather than Someone to trust?
In what ways can you more fully embrace Christ as your righteousness, holiness, and redemption today?
Are there areas where you’ve been striving rather than abiding?
Prayer of Confidence
Father, I rejoice in the truth that Christ is my righteousness, holiness, and redemption. There is nothing I lack, for You have already given me everything in Him. I rest in Your sufficiency, knowing that the life of Christ in me is more than enough. I cease my striving and embrace the fullness of His indwelling presence, trusting that as I yield, His holiness will be expressed through me. Thank You for this unshakable union. Amen.
