Trusting in the Faithfulness of God

In an ever-changing world, one truth stands unshakable: God is faithful. This attribute, as A.W. Tozer explains in Chapter 15 of The Knowledge of the Holy, is more than a comforting concept—it is the foundation of our hope and the anchor for our souls. Understanding the faithfulness of God is not only theologically enriching but also deeply practical for our daily walk with Him.

God’s Faithfulness: The Unity of His Attributes

Tozer masterfully unpacks the interconnected nature of God’s attributes. God’s faithfulness cannot be isolated from His holiness, justice, or love. He writes, “All of God’s acts are consistent with all of His attributes… All that God does agrees with all that God is, and being and doing are one in Him.”

This unity assures us that God’s promises are as unchanging as His nature. Unlike human faithfulness, which often falters under external pressures or internal weaknesses, God’s faithfulness flows from His unchanging perfection. As the writer of Hebrews declares: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

God’s faithfulness also means He cannot act contrary to His character. Tozer highlights this truth, stating that any failure of God’s character would imply imperfection, which is impossible for Him. This gives us confidence that His promises are not only reliable but eternal.

The Practical Assurance of God’s Faithfulness

1. God’s Promises Are Secure

Tozer reminds us that “upon God’s faithfulness rests our whole hope of future blessedness.” Every promise in Scripture hinges on His unwavering faithfulness. From the covenants with Abraham to the assurance of eternal life through Christ, we can trust that God will never break His word.

The apostle Paul affirms this in 2 Corinthians 1:20: “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” When life feels uncertain, His faithfulness provides a foundation on which to stand.

2. Faithfulness in Trials

Tozer encourages believers to find hope in God’s faithfulness during trials. He writes that His faithfulness is “nourishing food for the soul”—a reminder that no matter how difficult life becomes, God remains true to His promises.

The psalmist echoes this comfort: “Your faithfulness endures to all generations; You established the earth, and it abides”(Psalm 119:90). Whether we are facing temptations, anxieties, or fears, His faithfulness ensures we are never alone.

3. God’s Faithfulness as Our Example

As image-bearers of God, we are called to reflect His faithfulness in our lives. While our human faithfulness is imperfect, the Holy Spirit empowers us to live in a way that mirrors His character. Faithfulness in relationships, commitments, and service becomes a testimony of God’s work within us.

A Faithful Savior

Tozer points us to Jesus Christ as the ultimate expression of God’s faithfulness. Christ’s unwavering obedience to the Father, even to the point of death, reveals the depth of God’s commitment to redeem humanity. Revelation 19:11 portrays Jesus as the one who is “Faithful and True,” riding toward victory.

This faithfulness is personal. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross assures us that God will never leave or forsake us. In our darkest moments, we can trust that His faithfulness will carry us through.

Living in Light of God’s Faithfulness

How can we apply the truth of God’s faithfulness to our daily lives?

  1. Develop Personal Fellowship with the Lord
Faithfulness is not just something we observe in God—it is something we experience in relationship with Him. Prioritize daily fellowship with the Lord through prayer, worship, and meditating on His Word. Seek to know Him intimately, not just as a concept, but as the faithful, loving God who desires to walk with you through every moment of life.

  2. Meditate on His Promises
Spend time in Scripture, identifying God’s promises and meditating on their significance. Let them remind you of His unchanging nature and draw you deeper into trust.

  3. Reflect on His Faithfulness
Take time to recall how God has been faithful in your life. Journal moments where you’ve seen His hand at work, whether in answered prayers, unexpected provisions, or the peace He’s given during trials. Let these memories strengthen your trust in His continued care.

  4. Be Faithful in Response
Strive to reflect God’s faithfulness in your commitments and relationships. Faithfulness in your daily life—whether in work, family, or ministry—is a testimony to the God you serve. Lean on the Holy Spirit for strength when you falter, knowing that His power is made perfect in your weakness.

  5. Rest in His Character
When life feels unstable, anchor yourself in the knowledge that God’s faithfulness never changes. Trust Him to keep His promises, even when circumstances seem bleak. His character is your firm foundation in an ever-changing world.

Conclusion: A Song of Faithfulness

Tozer notes that the faithfulness of God has inspired worship throughout the ages. From the psalms of David to the hymns of the Church, believers have celebrated the unchanging nature of their faithful God.

As we reflect on God’s faithfulness, let us echo the words of Lamentations 3:22-23: “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

God’s faithfulness is the foundation of our peace, the source of our hope, and the reason for our worship. In Him, we find the confidence to face today and the assurance to embrace eternity.

Let us live each day trusting in His unwavering faithfulness, proclaiming with joy: “Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.”
