Triumphant Living, Even in the Unexpected

Even when the trail winds through fog and valleys, His triumph leads the way.

In this devotion, Bob Hoekstra unveils a powerful truth through Paul’s experience in Troas: triumph in Christ is not measured by smooth circumstances, visible outcomes, or emotional ease. When Paul arrived to preach the gospel and found the door open, we might expect a victorious ministry moment. But he confesses, “I had no rest in my spirit.” His companion Titus was missing, and the absence of a trusted partner was enough to send him onward to Macedonia instead.

To the casual observer, this could appear to be a failed mission—an opportunity abandoned, fruitfulness forfeited. But Paul doesn't interpret it through human optics. He lifts his gaze above the seen and the felt, and declares, “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ.” His triumphant living isn’t situational; it’s spiritual. It flows not from success but from surrender, not from outcomes but from being led by Christ.

This kind of living—triumphant even in the midst of turmoil or delay—is only possible when the believer yields fully to Christ as the Leader. Christ’s triumph becomes our own, not because we perform well, but because we abide well. His death, resurrection, and ascension already secured the victory. We’re not striving for it; we’re walking in it, letting His life lead through ours.

Journal Entry in the Voice of the Holy Spirit Through Scripture

Child, I was with Paul in Troas, just as I am with you in your moments of uncertainty. When your spirit has no rest, I do not withdraw. I abide. And though the open door may gleam with opportunity, I am your peace, not your plans. I lead you in triumph, not through unbroken success, but through union with Me.

My triumph is not measured in applause or productivity, but in the fragrance of Christ radiating through yielded lives. I work all things after the counsel of My will. I make all things work together for good to those who love Me and are called according to My purpose. I know the path before you, and it does not depend on perfect conditions or perfect companions. I have already won the battle. You are more than a conqueror through Me.

Even when it seems like you are retreating, you are advancing in My victory. Even when doors close or companions are missing, I am leading. You need not analyze every twist in the road—I am the Way. You are My workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which I prepared beforehand for you to walk in. As you trust and follow, you walk in triumph—because I always lead you there.

Let your heart rest. I do not lead you into confusion, but into peace. I do not lead you in fear, but in power, love, and a sound mind. I am your Shepherd, your Guide, and your Victory. Walk with Me, and let your life be the incense of My triumph.

Prayer

Thank You, Lord, that You have already secured the victory. Even when I don't see what You're doing, even when rest eludes me or the road feels uncertain, I trust that I am being led in Your triumph. Thank You that You are not just sending me into victory—you are leading me within it, moment by moment. I choose to walk in this truth today: that my life is not defined by how things appear, but by who is leading me. And You always lead triumphantly.
