The Overflow of Devotion: Living Out Our Calling
Inspired by insights from Oswald Chambers' "My Utmost for His Highest"
"But when it pleased God…to reveal His Son in me…"
— Galatians 1:15-16
The call of God is not confined to a specific role, job, or ministry. It is far deeper—it is God revealing His Son within us. From that revelation flows a life of natural, joyful service. We don’t serve God to earn His favor or to fulfill a duty; we serve because His presence within us overflows into action.
Imagine a tree planted beside a flowing river. Its roots are nourished by the constant stream, and as a result, it naturally produces fruit. The tree doesn’t strain to bear fruit; it simply does so because it’s rooted in life-giving water. In the same way, when Christ is revealed in us, our service becomes a natural extension of our life in Him.
Paul’s life illustrates this truth. God revealed His Son within Paul, and from that deep inner transformation, Paul naturally expressed Christ to the world. His preaching wasn’t an obligation but an overflow of love and devotion. Service became the fruit of his union with Christ, not the root of it.
Our service to God is not about performing tasks but about allowing Christ’s life within us to express itself outwardly. Whether it’s encouraging a friend, showing kindness in our daily routines, or working with integrity, every action becomes a love-gift back to God when it flows from His life in us.
A Life of Overflow, Not Obligation
This truth reshapes how we think about serving God. It’s not about searching for some grand assignment or waiting for a specific task. God has already given us His very life through Jesus Christ. As we walk in fellowship with Him, our actions, big or small, naturally express His love and character.
Our job is simply to remain rooted in Christ, trusting that His nature within us will bear the fruit of service exactly where we are. There’s no need to strive or question if we’re doing enough. Like the tree by the river, our lives will bear fruit in season.
A Prayer of Confidence and Rest in God's Calling
Father,
Thank You for revealing Your Son in me and making me a vessel of Your life. I trust that Christ within me is enough to express Your love and purpose in all I do. I rest in the truth that serving You is not a burden but a natural overflow of my union with You. I embrace the opportunities You place before me today, knowing that You have already equipped me to reflect Your heart. May my actions flow from the life of Christ within me, bearing fruit that glorifies You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Final Thought
Our calling isn’t something distant or complex—it’s the simple reality of Christ living in us. As we remain rooted in Him, our service becomes the effortless fruit of a life transformed by His love. Let us walk today in confidence, trusting that He will naturally express His life through us.
