Engraved in His Hands

Devotional inspired by "Immeasurably More"

"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me."
Isaiah 49:15-16

The weight of discouragement can feel overwhelming, especially when circumstances whisper that God has forgotten us. In times of loneliness, failure, or regret, it is easy to assume that His love has waned, that our missteps have distanced us beyond His reach. But God’s love is not like human love. It does not waver with emotions or change with circumstances. His commitment is eternal, and His devotion is unwavering.

The imagery in this passage is striking. The strongest human bond—the love of a mother for her child—is used as a comparison, yet even that love can falter. But God? He cannot forget His own. The engraving on His hands is not mere ink that can fade, nor is it a memory that time can erase. It is a permanent mark, a declaration that you are His, forever secured in His love.

When Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection, He showed them His hands—the very hands that bore the wounds of His sacrifice (Luke 24:39). Those scars were more than proof of suffering; they were the undeniable evidence of love, a love that held nothing back. You are written in those hands, not with ink but with the very wounds that secured your redemption.

Perhaps today finds you in a season of discouragement. You may feel unseen, unheard, or forgotten. But rest in the certainty of His promise: I will not forget you. The same God who called light into existence, who shaped the stars with His word, and who formed you in your mother’s womb has set His love upon you with an unshakable resolve. His hands bear the proof.

Reflection

  • Have you ever felt that God had forgotten you? How does this passage challenge that thought?

  • What does it mean to you personally that your name is engraved on His hands?

  • How might this truth reshape your perspective in seasons of discouragement?

Prayer

Father, I rejoice in Your unwavering love. You have engraved me on the palms of Your hands, securing me in Your faithfulness forever. Though my emotions may falter, Your promises never change. I trust in Your unfailing commitment, knowing that I am never out of Your sight or beyond Your care. My life is held in the hands that bear the marks of love, and in that truth, I rest today. Amen.
