Living in the Garden of Grace: Better Health—More Energy!
Reflections from David Kuykendall’s Living in the Garden of Grace
The Spirit’s Life-Giving Power
Romans 8:11 provides a remarkable promise:
"But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you."
This verse assures us that the Holy Spirit’s work extends beyond spiritual renewal to include the revitalization of our physical lives. The same power that raised Christ from the dead dwells in us, offering life to our mortal bodies as we yield to Him.
The Physical Toll of Negative Emotions
Negative emotions—anger, resentment, fear, and worry—are not only spiritually harmful but physically draining. Many believers have testified that such emotions can sap the energy gained from a night’s rest, leaving them exhausted and depleted. Medical research confirms this, linking chronic stress and unresolved emotions to significant health problems, including heart disease and immune dysfunction.
These emotions are often tied to living out of the flesh, the residual self-reliance and coping mechanisms from our old way of life. However, through our crucifixion with Christ, we are freed from these patterns. As we allow the Spirit to fill us, we experience not only spiritual renewal but physical vitality.
How the Spirit Renews Us
The Apostle Paul emphasizes that the Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells within us, providing life and energy. This truth has practical implications for our daily lives:
Fleshly Living Drains: Activities born out of self-effort and human striving deplete energy, leaving us weary.
Spirit-Led Living Renews: When we yield to the Spirit, He not only sustains us but also supplies extraordinary energy for the tasks God sets before us.
This life of grace—the Spirit-filled life—frees us from the exhaustion of living by the flesh. Instead, we find ourselves energized for God’s purposes.
Recognizing God’s Sovereignty in Physical Weakness
While the Spirit renews and empowers, God sometimes allows physical limitations or health challenges as a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). These challenges serve to deepen our dependence on Him. Even in seasons of physical weakness, His grace is sufficient, and His strength is made perfect in our dependence upon Him.

“Father, thank You for the life-giving power of Your Spirit dwelling within me. I release any unresolved emotions or self-driven striving that drains my energy. Fill me with Your vitality for the tasks You have planned for me today. Whether I walk in strength or limitation, I rest in Your sufficiency and trust Your Spirit to sustain me. Amen.”
A Final Thought
The Spirit’s work in us not only transforms our hearts and minds but also affects our physical bodies. As we walk in grace, we experience the abundant life Jesus promised, filled with His strength and energy for each day. Even in times of physical weakness, we can trust the Spirit to sustain us as we depend fully on the Lord.
