Living Above: Embracing Our Heavenly Perspective

"Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth" (Colossians 3:2).

What does it truly mean to set our minds on things above? This phrase is not just a call to lofty thoughts; it’s an invitation to live from a position of victory, security, and love in Christ. As believers, we are already seated with Him in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 2:6). From this heavenly vantage point, we gain a clearer perspective of our lives, rooted in His truth and the assurance of His promises.

Seeing Life from Above

Bill Gillham once explained this beautifully: setting our minds on things above means picturing ourselves seated in Christ at the right hand of the Father. It’s a shift in perspective—a view of life from a place of security, trust, and love. From this heavenly vantage point, we see the complete victory that Christ has already secured for us.

Imagine looking at the challenges and circumstances of life from the Father’s presence, where His love envelops you, His sovereignty reigns, and His promises hold true. Suddenly, the storms of life don’t seem so overwhelming. We see them for what they are—temporary and under His control. This heavenly mindset reminds us that we are deeply loved, fully secure, and already victorious in Christ.

A Life of Rest and Victory

From our position in Christ, we live not from a place of striving but from one of rest. The battles we face—whether in relationships, work, or personal struggles—are seen through the lens of His finished work.

  • Security: In Christ, we are in the presence of the Father, fully protected and deeply loved. No matter what the world throws at us, our eternal position remains unshaken.

  • Perspective: Earthly challenges lose their power when viewed from the light of eternity. What feels insurmountable on the ground appears manageable when seen from the victory Christ has already achieved.

  • Empowerment: We don’t face life’s trials in our strength but with His strength flowing through us. This heavenly perspective empowers us to act with wisdom, love, and grace.

  • Love: Anchored in the Father’s love, we become conduits of that love, touching the lives of those around us.

Living Out Our Heavenly Identity

So, what does it look like to live this way? It begins with setting our minds on Him—not just during morning devotions, but throughout the day. This continuous communion transforms how we see and engage with the world.

When you wake up, picture yourself in the Father’s presence. As you move through your morning routine, remember that Christ is with you. When you face the demands of work, school, or family, approach them from a place of trust, knowing that the One who overcame the world dwells in you. Even in the mundane tasks, there is joy, for His love flows through you to others.

Instead of being overwhelmed by life’s demands, you approach each moment with the peace and confidence that comes from knowing you are seated with Christ in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 2:6). This perspective transforms every interaction and responsibility into an opportunity to reflect His glory and grace.

Do you see His wisdom and beauty in this approach to life?

Walking in Victory

Paul writes, “For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). This truth isn’t just a promise for the future—it’s a present reality. Living with a heavenly mindset allows us to rest in His provision, trust His guidance, and walk in His strength.

When the world feels chaotic, remember where you are seated. From that place of rest and victory, His life flows through you, bringing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control into every corner of your life and into the lives of those you encounter.

A Prayer of Praise

Lord, thank You for the incredible truth that we are seated with Christ in the heavenly realms. Thank You for Your love that secures us, Your peace that steadies us, and Your Spirit that empowers us.

Father, we acknowledge that everything we need for life and godliness is already ours in Christ. Today, we choose to set our minds on things above, living from the reality of Your victory. May Your love and grace flow through us to touch the lives of others, reflecting Your glory in all we do.

To You be all the glory, now and forever. Amen.
