Job 39 – Reflections on God’s Untamable Wisdom and Wild Providence
When life feels untamable, remember—the One who formed the warhorse rides above every storm.
Job 39 is a poetic parade of creatures that live beyond human control and comprehension. From the birth of mountain goats to the absurdity of the ostrich, God invites Job—and us—to witness His sovereign hand at work in places we rarely observe or understand. Each creature, whether wild donkey or warhorse, ostrich or eagle, represents something untamed, strange, or fierce. And yet, God knows them all intimately. He assigns their seasons, their homes, their strengths, and even their limits.
The underlying message is clear: God’s care is not limited to what we can manage or domesticate. In fact, His providence is most visible in what we cannot control. Job had wrestled with God’s use of time and power—why suffering came, why justice felt delayed. But through this display of wild creation, God invites Job to release his demand to understand and instead trust the wisdom and power of the One who reigns over everything from awkward ostriches to bloodthirsty eagles.

My child, your times are in My hands. I numbered your days before one of them came to be, just as I oversee the time of every birth in the wild. Though you cannot trace My calendar, you can rest in My compassion, for not a moment of your life escapes My care. Just as the mountain goat gives birth on a cliff and the wild donkey roams in the desert without fences, you are free to live beyond fear—because My providence does not end at the border of your understanding.
You wonder at the wild ox, strong but untrainable. I tell you: some things are not meant to be subdued by man, for they reflect My power, not yours. I formed the ostrich, foolish and flightless, yet swift beyond comprehension. I have made her strange on purpose, that you might know not everything follows your logic. When you see oddities in life, do not judge them through your wisdom. Instead, let them remind you to revere Mine.
And look to the warhorse, bold and unafraid, eager for battle. This, too, I made. Not all power is soft; some is fierce. But nothing exists apart from My purpose. Even those who brought calamity upon you rode beasts I fashioned. I am not aloof to your pain. I am sovereign over it.
Consider the eagle, who soars beyond sight, whose eyes find prey where none is seen. She swoops, and blood flows—but I am there, sovereign still. I do not avert My gaze from the hard and the haunting. I preside even where blood stains the earth. If I govern the eagle’s path and the fall of every prey, then you may rest knowing that nothing—not even your suffering—escapes My eternal care.
I do not owe you explanations. But I offer you something greater—My presence, My wisdom, and My unwavering providence. Trust Me. Even in the wild.

Prayer
Father, I trust You in the wild. Whether I find myself beside the quiet waters or in the dust kicked up by warhorses, I know You are present, wise, and in control. You govern both the familiar and the feral, and nothing escapes Your eye or care. You’ve never required me to understand all things—only to trust You. Thank You for displaying Your power not just in order, but in the disorder I cannot tame. I rest tonight not because life is simple, but because You are sovereign over the complexities. You are good, and You are near.
Amen.
