Jesus Christ, Our Only Foundation
When the winds rise and the waters churn, the foundation does not move.
Today’s reflection unveils a truth as steady as the bedrock of the earth itself—Jesus Christ is not just a moral teacher or a religious figure, but the foundation upon which all true life is built. Bob Hoekstra wants us to see that any attempt to build life on human wisdom, power, influence, or riches is like erecting a cathedral on quicksand. It may look stable at first, but it’s destined to collapse.
Paul, calling himself a “wise master builder,” affirms that the only foundation laid for us is Christ Jesus. He isn’t offering a clever philosophical stance—he’s proclaiming a Person. Paul urges each of us to take care how we build, not if we build, but how. The structure of our lives, our thoughts, our relationships, our identity, must be framed upon the immovable rock that is Christ Himself.
David’s life backs this up. In his overwhelm, he cried out for something higher than himself—and found God to be that Rock, that fortress he could trust. Isaiah echoes this prophetic anchor by pointing to the coming of Jesus as the sure foundation, the tried and precious cornerstone. The one who believes in Him won’t act in panic or haste—they’ll stand firm, not flailing for stability but grounded in God’s eternal security.
This is the grace in which we now live: Jesus, the tried stone, has already been laid. We don’t need to pour a foundation—we need only build wisely upon the One already given. All other grounds—however shiny or sensible—will sink.
Personalized Journal Entry (Holy Spirit’s Voice Through Scripture):
I have laid for you a foundation that cannot be shaken. I am the Rock beneath your feet, the Cornerstone upon which your life is secured. Do not look to wealth, applause, or understanding to steady you—for these crumble like dust in the wind. Instead, fix your gaze upon the Stone I set in Zion, tested through sorrow, crowned in glory, unmovable in love.
When your heart grows faint, I lift you high above the floodwaters, setting your feet where the storms cannot reach. I am your fortress and your defense; because you dwell in Me, you shall not be moved.
Your life is not your own, for it has been hidden with Christ in God. Upon Him you now build—not with frantic effort, but with restful trust. Each act of faith, each moment of surrender, each step in My Spirit is a stone fitted to the Master’s plan.
You are not alone in your construction. I am the Builder who completes what He begins. I have given you grace to build, wisdom to discern, and peace to endure. Do not chase fleeting ground when the Eternal Rock stands beneath you. Rest where I have placed you. I do not shift. I do not fail.
—Psalm 61:2, Psalm 62:6, Isaiah 28:16, 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, Colossians 3:3
Prayer:
Father, thank You for placing me securely on the foundation of Christ. I no longer search for solid ground—You’ve already given it. I trust that no wave of emotion, no cultural tide, no unforeseen loss can unsettle me when I remain rooted in Jesus. Today, I choose not to build with worldly logic or anxious striving, but to abide in the quiet confidence of Your perfect placement. I know the Rock beneath me will never give way.
