Living with Purpose in Christ
📖 “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” — Philippians 1:21 (BSB)
The apostle Paul lived with a singular focus—Christ. Whether in life or in death, his purpose remained unchanged. If he were to continue living, it would be for the benefit of others, that they might grow in faith. If he were to depart, it would be his great gain, as he would be with Christ. This perspective freed him from the self-preservation instinct that grips so many. His life was not about personal comfort or longevity, but about Christ living through him.
Many find themselves hesitant to fully surrender to this perspective. Fear of loss, uncertainty, or even an overattachment to earthly security can hinder the joy that comes from abandoning one’s life entirely into the hands of the Lord. Yet, when we realize that our lives are already hidden with Christ, there is no need for grasping—only yielding.
Paul's confidence in his continued life came not from a striving for health or self-preservation but from the recognition that God had appointed his days for a purpose. His well-being was not his primary concern—his calling was. And so, resting in that truth, he knew he would remain for the sake of others. This is the secret to true strength: not self-effort, but the recognition that our lives are entirely at God’s disposal.
Imagine a messenger on a royal errand. He does not worry whether he will reach his destination safely. He knows that the King who sent him will provide all that is necessary for the journey. His task is only to move forward, step by step, in trust. Likewise, when we cease clinging to our lives and entrust them fully to Christ, we walk in the confidence that He sustains us until our mission is complete.
Reflection
What does it mean for you personally to live as Christ and to die as gain?
Are there areas where fear or self-preservation hold you back from fully embracing God’s purposes?
How can you shift your focus from mere survival to joyful, purposeful living?
Prayer
Father, I rejoice in the life You have given me in Christ. My days are Yours, and my purpose is found in Your will. Thank You that I do not need to cling to my life but can rest in the certainty that You sustain me for the work You have prepared. Whether in serving today or entering glory tomorrow, I trust You completely. May Christ be magnified in every moment. Amen.
