Infinite Wisdom: Trusting the Perfect Plans of Our All-Wise God
Continuing our journey through The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer, Chapter 11 reveals the awe-inspiring wisdom of God. This wisdom, infinitely pure and boundless, invites us to trust Him fully—even in the uncertainties of life.
May these reflections deepen our faith and remind us that His ways, though beyond our understanding, are always perfect.
The Infinite Wisdom of God
Tozer begins by affirming that God’s wisdom is limitless: “His understanding is infinite” (Psalm 147:5). This truth anchors every belief we hold about Him.
Unlike human wisdom, which is limited and often self-serving, God’s wisdom sees the end from the beginning and works with flawless precision. Every action He takes is guided by His wisdom, “first for His own glory, and then for the highest good of the greatest number for the longest time.”
This reality is a source of deep assurance: nothing in creation is random or meaningless. Every detail of our lives is woven into His perfect plan, even when we cannot comprehend it.
Wisdom That Is Pure and Good
When Scripture speaks of God’s wisdom, it always ties it to His moral purity and love. Tozer emphasizes that God’s wisdom is inseparable from His goodness:
“All His acts are as pure as they are wise, and as good as they are wise and pure.”
James 3:17 describes wisdom this way:
“The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits.”
This wisdom is not distant or detached; it is active in our lives, shaping us and drawing us closer to Him.
Trusting Him in the Dark
Tozer poignantly observes, “God constantly encourages us to trust Him in the dark.”
When life feels uncertain, His wisdom assures us that He sees the way ahead.
When we face trials, His wisdom is crafting something eternal and beautiful.
Isaiah 42:16 offers this promise:
“I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. These things I will do for them, and not forsake them.”
It’s natural to hesitate when we can’t see the full picture, but faith calls us to trust the One who sees all.
The Cross: The Pinnacle of God’s Wisdom
God’s wisdom shines most clearly in the cross of Christ. What appeared to be a moment of defeat was, in reality, the ultimate victory. Paul writes:
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18).
Through the cross, God reconciled humanity to Himself with “flawless skill.” Tozer remarks, “Our concern is not to explain but to proclaim.” While we may not fully grasp the depths of the atonement, we can rest assured that it was accomplished perfectly.
Living in Light of His Wisdom
Tozer challenges us not to hold God’s wisdom merely as a belief but to trust it actively in our daily lives. What might this look like?
Abandon Self-Reliance: Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” Release the need to control or predict the future.
Rest in His Providence: Trust that even in life’s uncertainties, “all things work together for good to those who love God” (Romans 8:28).
Seek His Guidance: James 1:5 invites us to approach God for wisdom, confident that He gives it generously to those who ask in faith.
Encouragement for the Journey
Tozer beautifully captures the call to trust God’s wisdom:
“God has charged Himself with full responsibility for our eternal happiness and stands ready to take over the management of our lives the moment we turn in faith to Him.”
If you feel uncertain about the path ahead, take heart: God’s wisdom is at work in ways you cannot yet see. Trust Him, rest in His providence, and know that His plans are perfect.
