God’s Infinitude—The Boundless Nature of Our Creator
Have you ever stood in awe of a night sky, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the stars and galaxies? Even our universe, vast as it is, pales in comparison to the infinitude of God. It’s an attribute so immense that our finite minds can scarcely grasp it, yet it is a truth that anchors our hearts and shapes our lives.
For years, I thought I understood God—but it wasn’t until I tried to comprehend His infinitude that my understanding was shattered. The box I had created for Him was blown to smithereens as I realized that He is not just infinite in presence but in every one of His attributes—love, mercy, wisdom, and power. It hit me: My God is far bigger than I ever imagined.
This truth transformed how I saw my own circumstances. If God is infinite, then He is big enough to sustain me even in the direst situations. When I remember this, the peace and rest in His sufficiency are overwhelming. It makes me think of Paul’s words in Philippians 4:11-13, where he speaks of being content in every situation because Christ is his sufficiency:
"I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content… I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
This is what A.W. Tozer explores in Chapter 8 of The Knowledge of the Holy. Let’s dive into this profound truth and discover its implications for us as believers.
What Does It Mean That God Is Infinite?
Tozer defines infinitude as "limitlessness." Unlike anything in creation, God has no boundaries. Whatever He is, He is without measure or restriction. His power, love, mercy, and wisdom extend beyond what we can comprehend.
In Psalm 147:5, we read:
"Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite."
This means that God cannot be measured by human standards. While we speak of degrees—great or small, high or low—none of these apply to God. He simply is. As Tozer writes, “He is what He is in Himself, without qualifying thought or word.”
Why God’s Infinitude Matters
God’s Infinite Nature Brings Rest
In our daily lives, we are surrounded by limitations—time, resources, and even our own abilities. These constraints can lead to frustration, exhaustion, and a sense of futility. But God knows no such limits.
As Tozer beautifully puts it:
“Eternal years lie in His heart. For Him time does not pass, it remains; and those who are in Christ share with Him all the riches of limitless time and endless years.”Knowing that God is infinite allows us to rest in His sufficiency. He has all the time, power, and love we will ever need.
God’s Infinite Love Covers Us Completely
God’s love isn’t just abundant—it’s boundless. In Ephesians 3:18-19, Paul prays that believers may comprehend the vastness of this love:
“May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge.”Tozer reminds us that God’s love has no bounds because it is not merely something He gives; it is something He is. As we rest in His infinite love, we find security and joy that cannot be shaken.
God’s Infinite Mercy Meets Our Deepest Need
For those who have felt the crushing weight of guilt and sin, the infinite mercy of God is a lifeline. Tozer writes, “Against our deep creature-sickness stands God’s infinite ability to cure.”
Romans 5:20 declares:
“Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.”While sin has limits—it is the product of finite beings—God’s mercy and grace are limitless. They are sufficient to redeem and restore us, no matter how far we’ve fallen.
Living in Light of God’s Infinitude
Embrace Humility
Tozer and Anselm both urge us to approach God with reverence and awe. Anselm writes:
“Enter the inner chamber of thy mind; shut out all thoughts save that of God… Speak now to God, saying, I seek Thy face; Thy face, Lord, will I seek.”God’s infinitude humbles us, reminding us that He is far beyond our comprehension. Yet this humility also draws us into deeper worship and reliance on Him.
Rest in His Sufficiency
When life feels overwhelming, remember that God is never hurried or stressed. Tozer writes:
“God never hurries. There are no deadlines against which He must work.”Our limitations do not limit God. Trust in His infinite resources and His perfect timing.
Rejoice in Eternal Life
As believers, we share in God’s infinite life. Jesus said,
“This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent”(John 17:3).Eternal life is not just about duration; it’s about the quality of life we experience in relationship with the infinite God.
Conclusion: Worshiping the Infinite God
The infinitude of God is more than a theological concept—it is a truth that transforms how we live, think, and worship. When we turn from our finite struggles to the infinite God, we find rest for our souls and hope for eternity.
Tozer reminds us:
"How completely satisfying to turn from our limitations to a God who has none. Eternal years lie in His heart… Only to know this is to quiet our spirits and relax our nerves.”
When I consider the infinitude of God, I am reminded of Paul’s testimony: “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content” (Philippians 4:11). Whether life brings abundance or need, comfort or trial, I can rest in His sufficiency because He is infinite.
Let us join Anselm in his prayer:
"I seek Thy face; Thy face, Lord, will I seek."
Reflection Question:
What difference does it make in your daily life to know that God is infinite and without limitation?
Closing Thought:
The infinitude of God frees us from striving and invites us into peace. Whatever your circumstances today, rest in the boundless love, mercy, and power of the God who knows no limits.
