Getting to Know the Infinite God: Building the Foundation for Trust by Exploring A.W. Tozer's The Knowledge of the Holy

I’ve shared recently about my Jordan River moment—the night I trusted God in a way I never had before. It was the first step into the abundant life that Jesus offers us, believing that His promises were true and living as though they applied to me. That step changed everything. Yet, looking back, I realize how much easier it would have been to trust Him if I had truly known Him better—not just facts about Him, but the infinite depths of His character.

Trusting the God We Know

Trust becomes effortless when you know the One you’re trusting. My understanding of God before that night was sincere, but limited. I believed He was good, holy, and powerful, but my concept of Him was confined by my own experiences and imagination. It wasn’t that I doubted Him; it’s that I hadn’t yet grasped the fullness of who He is.

As I mentioned in a previous post, A.W. Tozer’s The Knowledge of the Holy became a catalyst for that understanding. This astonishing book revealed the majesty and magnificence of God in ways that shattered the small box I had unknowingly placed Him in. Tozer’s reflections on God’s infinite attributes—His love, wisdom, holiness, and sovereignty—opened my eyes to a reality far greater than I could have imagined. Midway through the book, my heart echoed Job’s words:

“My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you” (Job 42:5).

As I closed the final chapter, the only response I could muster was, “He is magnificent.”

Moving from Testimony to Truth

My Jordan River moment was a step of faith, trusting in what God said about me and my union with Christ. But in hindsight, I see how much my understanding of God limited my ability to fully rest in His promises.

Tozer’s insights helped me understand that God is not just a Being who does loving things—He is love. His love, holiness, and justice are not actions or choices; they are the essence of who He is. And because He is infinite, His attributes are without limit. He cannot run out of love, diminish in power, or falter in wisdom.

This realization transformed my walk with Christ. It’s one thing to believe God’s promises intellectually; it’s another to trust them wholeheartedly because you are coming to know more deeply the One who made them.

An Invitation to Rediscover God

Over the coming days, I’ll be sharing reflections on Tozer’s The Knowledge of the Holy. Each chapter explores a different aspect of God’s nature, drawing us into deeper awe and worship. My prayer is that these truths will encourage you to step out of the limitations of human understanding and embrace the infinite God who reveals Himself to us.

As we begin this journey together, I encourage you to ask yourself:

  • What comes to your mind when you think about God? What is your perception of Him?

  • How might a deeper understanding of His infinite nature impact your trust in Him?

A Prayer of Praise and Gratitude

Lord, we thank You for who You are—magnificent, infinite, and beyond our comprehension. Thank You for revealing Yourself through Your creation, Your written Word and through Your Living Word, Jesus Christ. You are holy, loving, and sovereign, and we rest in the truth that Your promises are sure because You are faithful. We trust You because of who You are.

Thank You for calling us to know You more deeply. May our hearts be stirred to worship and our lives reflect the beauty and glory of Your grace. To You be all the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Let’s embark on this journey of rediscovering the majesty of God. Together, let’s move from a small, confined view of Him to a life-changing recognition of His infinite greatness.
