Following the Shepherd—Hearing His Voice, Walking in His Grace

Adapted and inspired by Day by Day by Grace, this series reflects on God’s boundless grace and His work in our lives, guiding us to live in humble dependence on Him.

When Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me”(Luke 9:23), He extended an invitation that would transform every aspect of our lives. It’s a call to a relationship, not just a set of rules. As I reflect on what it means to follow Him, I see how essential it is to walk in daily humility and dependence on our Good Shepherd.

A Simple, Yet Life-Changing Call: "Follow Me"

At its core, discipleship can be summed up in two words: “Follow Me.” Yet, this simple call requires a heart posture of surrender. First, Jesus calls us to deny ourselves—to set aside our self-driven ways. Then, He invites us to take up our cross daily—acknowledging that our old, self-centered life is crucified with Him. But He doesn’t leave us there. He gently leads us forward with a loving invitation to follow Him.

When I think about “following Jesus,” I’m reminded of sheep following their shepherd. It’s not about knowing every step of the journey but about trusting the One who leads. Sheep don’t need to figure out the path—they just need to stay close to their shepherd. Isn’t that a beautiful picture of grace?

Jesus: The Shepherd of Grace

Throughout Scripture, we see Jesus as our Good Shepherd. He describes Himself in John 10:11:
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep."

It amazes me to think that Jesus not only laid down His life for us but also continues to guide us every step of the way. His voice leads us, His Spirit empowers us, and His grace sustains us.

I’ve had moments in my life when I felt lost—uncertain of where to go or what to do next. But in those times, when I quieted my heart and turned to the Lord, I heard His gentle leading through His Word and His Spirit. His grace became my anchor, reminding me that I didn’t need to figure everything out. I just needed to follow Him.

Walking in the Fullness of Grace

As we follow Jesus, we begin to experience the fullness of His grace in our lives. Colossians 2:9-10 reminds us:
"For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him."

That completeness isn’t something we achieve—it’s something we receive as we walk in humble dependence on Him. Whether it’s wisdom for a difficult decision, peace in the midst of chaos, or strength when we’re weary, Jesus has everything we need.

Reflective Takeaways

  • Stay Close to the Shepherd: Take time to hear His voice through Scripture and prayer. Are you letting Him guide your steps today?

  • Trust His Grace: Remember that He is your sufficiency. Whatever you face, He has the resources to carry you through. In fact, He is your functional source of life itself.

  • Follow Him Daily: Discipleship isn’t a one-time decision—it’s a daily walk of humility and faith. What does “following Jesus” look like in your life right now?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for being my Good Shepherd—for laying down Your life for me and leading me with grace. I trust in Your faithful guidance and sufficiency. May I rest in the fullness of who You are, abiding in Your presence each day. Lead me, Lord, as I follow You. Amen.
