Our Abandonment to Him

Abandonment is not loss; it is stepping into the fullness of Christ Himself.

Insights from Oswald Chambers My Utmost for His Highest

Oswald Chambers confronts the tendency to approach God with a self-seeking spirit, subtly making our abandonment to Him conditional on what we gain in return. Too often, we surrender to God because we want to be freed from sin, made holy, or given a spiritual platform to showcase transformation—yet true abandonment does not consider any of these things. The essence of Christianity is not about what we get but about the Person of Christ Himself.

Jesus’ response to Peter in Mark 10:28-29 makes clear that those who leave everything for His sake will receive abundant blessing. But the motivation must be Christ alone—without self-interest. Chambers warns against a commercialized faith that trades abandonment for personal benefit. A disciple is not someone who forsakes things for a better version of self, but one who prefers Jesus over all else, even above natural affections and obligations. When faced with the test of choosing between human relationships or self-interest and Christ, true disciples do not hesitate.

God is not a means to an end; He is the end. Real abandonment is not about escaping sin or securing eternal life—it is about preferring Christ over everything, for His own sake.

Personalized Journal Entry in the Holy Spirit’s Voice

You were made for Me. I called you by name before the foundation of the world, not for what I could do for you, but for Myself. You are My beloved, and I am yours. But do you see? True surrender is not about what you gain—it is about losing yourself in Me, resting in My embrace, and knowing that I alone am your reward.

You do not have to measure your surrender, nor calculate what you have left behind. I am not waiting for you to prove your devotion by forsaking comforts or earthly ties—I am waiting for you to let go of your striving and rest in the certainty of My love. Abandonment is not sacrifice in exchange for blessings; it is simply yielding to the truth that I am enough.

Why do you hesitate when natural affections pull at your heart? Have I not promised that whoever loses their life for My sake will find it? Do you trust Me enough to believe that in yielding everything, you will never lack? My kingdom is not built on what you can give up, but on your union with Me. In that union, all things are rightly ordered.

Let go of the concern over what it costs. The cross was the full cost—paid in full. You are free. I am the prize, the portion, the fullness of joy. Abide in Me, and all else will fade into its proper place.

(Mark 10:28-29, Luke 14:26, Matthew 16:25, Philippians 3:8, John 15:4).

My Prayer

Lord, You are more than enough. I let go of every calculation, every thought of what I have given up, and I rest in the truth that You alone are my portion. There is no higher calling than to simply be Yours. You have already given me everything I need in Yourself.

I abandon myself to You—not to gain, not to be made into something, but because You are worthy. Thank You for the freedom of true surrender, for the certainty that I do not need to measure the cost, because You are my great reward. I trust You with all that I am, knowing that in You, I lack nothing.

Amen.
