Ezekiel 34
“The Good Shepherd gathers what others scatter, and keeps His own forever.”
Ezekiel 34 lays bare the failure of Israel’s leaders—called “shepherds”—who used their positions to serve themselves rather than tending to the people entrusted to their care. They consumed the benefits of leadership while neglecting their most basic responsibilities: nurturing the weak, healing the sick, seeking the lost, and protecting the vulnerable. Because of their neglect, God’s sheep were scattered and vulnerable to danger. God’s judgment against these selfish shepherds is clear: He will remove them from their posts and personally take over the role of Shepherd.
Then comes a breathtaking shift in tone. God declares that He Himself will search for His sheep. He will gather the scattered, bind the injured, and feed them with good pasture. He will judge between the sheep themselves, ensuring that even within the flock, justice prevails. The oppressive “fat sheep” who push aside the weaker ones will not be allowed to continue unchecked.
Finally, a promise blooms forth—God will raise up a true shepherd: “My servant David.” Though David had been dead for centuries, this is a prophetic reference to the coming Messiah—Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd. He alone would perfectly embody the care, protection, and justice Israel’s shepherds had failed to deliver. In Him, God’s people will find peace, provision, safety, and covenantal blessing.
Journal Entry Written in the Voice of the Holy Spirit through Scripture:
I searched for you when others left you scattered. I looked upon your bruises that no one tended and drew near to bind them in mercy. I stood where no shepherd stood, and I became your Shepherd. I myself brought you out from the places of confusion and darkness. I fed you with truth, not manipulation. I led you beside still waters and caused you to lie down in green pastures, for I delight in your rest.
When the ones who were supposed to care for you instead used you for their gain, I took notice. I saw every bruise they ignored, every burden they placed on your back without lifting a finger to ease it. I will hold them accountable, for I am a God who sees, and I will not overlook injustice.
But you are not forsaken. I have made a covenant of peace with you, and I will cause showers of blessing to fall in their season. I have placed My servant—David’s greater Son—as your true Shepherd. He lays down His life for you. He knows you, and you know Him. He leads you not by force, but by presence.
You are no longer prey. I dwell in your midst. You are Mine, and I am yours. You shall dwell securely, and none shall make you afraid. I have broken the bars of your yoke and rescued you from those who enslaved you. You shall no longer be scattered, for I have gathered you into Myself.
Now walk in the abundance I provide. I, the Lord, am with you. I have made you My flock, the sheep of My pasture, and I will never cease to care for you.

Prayer:
Father, I rest in Your watchful eye and unfailing care. You have already given me the Good Shepherd—Your very Son—to tend what others neglected, to bind what others broke, to guard what others cast aside. You’ve shown Yourself to be the One who never walks away from the wounded or weary.
Thank You for the covenant of peace You’ve already made with me in Christ. I lack nothing. I trust You to carry me today as tenderly as You have carried me from the beginning, even when I didn’t recognize it. I rejoice that I no longer need to wonder if I am truly seen, known, or loved—for I am Your sheep, and You are my Shepherd forever.
