Embracing Our Unique Identity in Christ
(Inspired by the 12-28 devotional from Abide Above)
"If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
As believers, we have a unique identity that sets us apart—not just from the world but also from the systems and structures found in many religious traditions. The Bible makes it clear: when we are in Christ, we are not just improved versions of ourselves; we are entirely new creations, designed to live in relationship with Him.
A New Identity, A New Focus
The devotional reminds us that Christianity and Judaism, while historically linked, serve very different purposes in God’s plan. Under the Law of Moses, the focus was on the natural man, relying on his ability to obey God through his own strength. This law applied specifically to Israel and shaped their relationship with God on earth.
In contrast, Christianity sets aside the natural man altogether. Our faith is not about what we can do but about what Christ has already done. Through His death and resurrection, He has made us a new creation, equipped to live in the power of His Spirit, not in the strength of our flesh.
Grace for Today, Hope for Tomorrow
The devotional points out that the teachings of the kingdom (like those in the Sermon on the Mount) anticipate a future time when Jesus will reign on a purified earth. This kingdom will bring universal peace and righteousness. However, today, we live in the "age of grace." This means that our focus is not on earthly kingdoms but on our heavenly citizenship.
As ambassadors of Christ, our role is to live as witnesses to His grace and truth in this world. Our citizenship is in heaven, and our journey here is temporary—a pilgrimage toward our eternal home.
A People Set Apart
The beauty of our identity in Christ is that it transcends earthly distinctions. Paul writes in Galatians 3:28, "There is neither Jew nor Gentile… for you are all one in Christ Jesus." This means that in Christ, cultural, social, and national divisions no longer define us. What matters is our shared identity as new creations, united in Him.
A Practical Reflection
Think about your daily life. Are you striving to please God in your own strength, like trying to follow a set of rules? Or are you resting in the truth that, in Christ, you are already accepted, loved, and equipped to live out His purposes?
For example, imagine facing a tough decision at work or in your family. Instead of leaning on your own wisdom or striving to “get it right,” pause. Remind yourself: I am a new creation in Christ. He lives in me and will guide me. This mindset shifts the focus from self-effort to trusting His life in you.
Living as a New Creation
To live as a new creation is to embrace our heavenly identity while walking in grace day by day. It’s a life not bound by the limitations of the natural man but empowered by the Spirit of Christ within us.
As we walk this journey, let’s remember the words of L.S.C. in the devotional:
“The Church is foreign to the earth and related to it only as a witnessing people. They are strangers and pilgrims, ambassadors whose citizenship is in heaven.”
May we live each day as faithful ambassadors, representing the One who has made us new.
Scripture for Reflection:
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20).
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for making me a new creation in Christ. I trust You as I live in the reality of this identity, not striving in my own strength but trusting Your life within me. As I journey through this world, I know You will remind me that my true home is with You. May my life reflect Your grace and draw others to You. Amen.
