When God Blows the Walls Off the Box: Trusting the Infinite God

The Moment My Box Shattered

During seminary, I had an assignment to read The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer. I expected it to be insightful, maybe even inspiring, but I had no idea how deeply it would transform my understanding of God—or how it would shape my ability to trust Him.

Before reading Tozer, I unknowingly held a limited concept of God. My understanding wasn’t unbiblical, but it was manageable—contained in a “box” of logic and doctrine. It felt safe. I could make sense of God within this framework, even if that meant He was finite in my heart and mind.

But then came a moment in the middle of the book that stopped me in my tracks. Tozer’s scriptural exploration of God’s attributes began to chip away at my carefully constructed box. I was overwhelmed, convicted, and deeply moved. I had to set the book down and pray.

In tears, I confessed to God: “I’ve put You in a box. I’ve tried to fit You into my understanding, but You are so much more.” I felt like Job after hearing God’s response to his questioning:

“My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you” (Job 42:5).

God lovingly, yet firmly, revealed Himself to me as infinite. He was no longer contained by the walls of my limited understanding. His self-existence, His eternal nature, His infinite power and wisdom—everything about Him defied the boundaries I had created.

That moment changed everything. Trusting God wasn’t a struggle anymore; it became the only reasonable response to who He is.

Discovering the Attributes of the Infinite God

What struck me most in Tozer’s book was how he unveiled God’s attributes through Scripture, showing that every single one of them is infinite. Each chapter expanded my understanding of who God is:

  • The Self-Existence of God: He depends on no one and nothing.

  • The Self-Sufficiency of God: He needs nothing, yet He chooses to love us.

  • The Eternity of God: He exists outside of time, seeing the end from the beginning.

  • God’s Infinitude: There are no limits to His being, power, or presence.

  • The Immutability of God: He never changes.

  • The Omniscience of God: He knows all things—past, present, and future.

  • The Wisdom of God: His plans are always perfect.

  • The Omnipotence of God: He can accomplish all He wills.

  • The Omnipresence of God: He is always with us.

  • The Faithfulness of God: He keeps every promise.

  • The Goodness of God: He is perfectly good in all He does.

  • The Justice of God: He is completely righteous.

  • The Mercy of God: He shows compassion to the undeserving.

  • The Grace of God: He gives what we could never earn.

  • The Love of God: His love is infinite and sacrificial.

  • The Holiness of God: He is utterly pure and set apart.

  • The Sovereignty of God: He reigns supreme over all creation.

As I reflected on these truths, I realized how small my view of God had been. Seeing Him as infinite removed any lingering doubts about His trustworthiness.

Trusting the Infinite God

After that experience, my ability to trust God changed completely—not because I suddenly understood everything He was doing, but because I saw Him for who He truly is.

  • A God who is infinite in wisdom doesn’t make mistakes.

  • A God who is infinite in power is never outmatched.

  • A God who is infinite in love is always working for our good.

  • A God who is faithful and unchanging will always keep His promises.

This doesn’t mean I stopped having questions. I still encounter mysteries I don’t understand. But those questions no longer shake my trust. Instead, they draw me closer to Him, reminding me to rest in the truth of Isaiah 55:8-9:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Trust isn’t something I work to manufacture. It flows naturally as I reflect on His character and His faithfulness.

An Invitation to Know Him More

If you’ve ever struggled to trust God, I encourage you to take time to truly get to know Him—not just through study, but through relationship. Open His Word and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal His character to you. Seek to know Him as He is: infinite, unchanging, and completely trustworthy.

For me, reading The Knowledge of the Holy was a pivotal part of this journey. It’s more than a book—it’s an invitation to encounter the infinite God.

A Prayer for Trusting the Infinite God

Lord, thank You for being a God who is infinite, unchanging, and completely trustworthy. Thank you for forgiving me for the ways I’ve tried to limit You in my understanding. Open my eyes to see You as You truly are, and teach me to trust You fully. Thank You for revealing Your character in Your Word and for being faithful in every way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
