Recall What God Remembers: A Love Rekindled
Inspired by Oswald Chambers' "My Utmost for His Highest"
"I remember…the kindness of your youth, the love of your betrothal."
— Jeremiah 2:2
Love often begins with fervor, a spark that ignites every aspect of our lives. Think of a campfire on a chilly night: the crackling warmth captivates everyone around it, drawing us closer. But as time goes on, the fire can dwindle, not because it lacks potential, but because it needs tending.
God recalls the early days of our love for Him—the moments of unrestrained devotion and simple joy in His presence. He remembers when our prayers overflowed with gratitude and our service was motivated solely by love. But over time, our zeal may wane, replaced by routine or weighed down by life’s challenges.
Tending the Fire
Much like a campfire, our love for Christ requires intentional care. It’s not that the source of our love—Christ Himself—has diminished. Rather, we’ve allowed the clutter of self-focus, worries, or pride to dampen our flame.
When God calls us to remember, it’s not to condemn but to invite us back to that place of intimacy. He wants us to rekindle the fire by reflecting on His faithfulness, recalling how He first drew us to Himself. The question is: will we take the time to pause, remember, and renew our devotion?
Extravagant Love
In the early days of our faith, we often didn’t measure our love for Jesus. We gave extravagantly, not counting the cost. Has that spirit of devotion been replaced by calculated service or an expectation of respect for our efforts? If so, let’s not stay in a place of regret but let it lead us to renewed passion.
The beauty of God’s love is that He never grows weary of us. Even when our love falters, He continues to pursue us. His kindness is the spark that reignites our love.
A Prayer of Confidence and Renewal
Father,
Thank You for remembering the love we once had and for never ceasing to draw us closer to You. You have already given us everything we need to rekindle our devotion. Let the memory of Your faithfulness fan the flame of love in our hearts. We rest in the assurance that Your love remains steadfast, always calling us back to intimacy with You. Thank You for being the source and sustainer of our love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Final Thought
The fire of love for Christ doesn’t extinguish on its own—it only dims when neglected. Let’s return to the One who first loved us, remembering His faithfulness and fanning the flame through moments of quiet devotion. The warmth of that fire will not only draw us closer to Him but illuminate His glory to those around us.
