Keep the Flame Alive

Inspired by A.B. Simpson's "Days of Heaven on Earth"
“Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in Him.”
Colossians 2:6 (BSB)

Starting something new can be difficult, but maintaining it often requires far less effort. This is especially true in our walk with Christ. A.B. Simpson beautifully reminds us that it’s easier to keep the fire burning than to relight it once it has gone out. The steady flame of our devotion doesn’t need to flicker or fade when we remain in Jesus, drawing continuously from His life within us.

Consider the image of an ancient lighthouse on a rugged coastline. Its light doesn’t flicker on and off with every passing storm. It remains constant because it is fueled by a steady supply of oil and diligent care. In the same way, our relationship with Christ is meant to burn steadily, not needing to be reignited each morning. The Holy Spirit within us is our constant source, ensuring that the light of His presence never dims.

When we cultivate spiritual habits—prayer, worship, and time in the Word—they become like well-worn paths where God’s life flows freely and naturally. These habits aren't burdensome duties but life-giving rhythms, aligning our hearts with the indwelling Christ.

Paul encourages us not to continually start over with repentance and foundational teachings but to press forward, walking steadily in Christ. The life we have in Him is not something we need to reignite daily; it is an ever-present flame sustained by His Spirit.

Prayer of Confidence in Christ

Father,
Thank You for the unshakable foundation I have in Christ. You have placed within me a flame that does not fade because it is fueled by Your very presence. I trust that as I walk in Jesus, His life within me sustains every step I take. I rest in the certainty that I lack nothing, for You have supplied all I need. May my devotion remain steady and unwavering, like a lighthouse shining brightly in every season. I rejoice in the freedom of knowing You are always near, guiding and keeping me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Thought

The fire of Christ within you was never meant to be rekindled each day—it was meant to burn steadily. Stay close to Him, remain in His Word, and trust that He has already provided all you need to walk in Him. Let His flame continue to shine brightly in your heart.
