Hearing the Voice of God: A Call Rooted in His Nature
Inspired by insights from Oswald Chambers' "My Utmost for His Highest"
"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'"
— Isaiah 6:8
When we think about God’s call on our lives, it’s easy to focus on our own abilities, personalities, or desires. We ask ourselves, “What am I equipped to do?” or “Where do my gifts fit in?” But Isaiah’s encounter with God challenges this mindset. God’s call is not about our nature—it’s about His. His voice is an expression of His own heart, character, and purpose.
Isaiah didn’t volunteer because he felt qualified. He responded because his soul had been attuned to God through a life-altering encounter. His response was born out of surrender, not self-confidence. God wasn’t looking for Isaiah’s skill set; He was looking for Isaiah’s availability.
The Call Comes From God’s Nature, Not Ours
Imagine standing by the sea. The waves crash and roar, calling out, but not everyone hears the same invitation. Some hear adventure, others hear peace, and some hear nothing at all. In the same way, God’s call is deeply personal, but it always reflects His nature—not ours. We hear it not because we’re qualified, but because He has placed His Spirit within us.
It’s not about consulting others or measuring our talents. It’s about a heart so connected to God that His desires naturally stir within us. This connection is not born out of effort but out of surrender—allowing His Spirit to align our hearts with His.
Responding Without Hesitation
Isaiah didn’t pause to weigh the pros and cons. He didn’t ask God for the specifics or negotiate the terms. His immediate response—"Here am I. Send me!"—reveals a heart fully yielded. God isn’t looking for perfection; He’s looking for willingness.
Likewise, God’s call on our lives may not align with our preferences or comfort zones. Yet, He has already provided everything we need in Christ to walk in that calling. Our role is to listen and respond, trusting that His nature is perfectly good and His plans are already equipped with His provision.
A Prayer of Trust and Confidence
Father,
Thank You for calling me according to Your nature and not my own. You have already given me all I need in Christ to respond to Your voice. I trust that Your purposes are good and that You will accomplish what You desire through me. I rest in the truth that I am fully equipped in You. May my heart remain attuned to Your voice, and may I respond without hesitation, knowing that You are faithful to complete the work You have begun. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Final Thought
God’s call is never about our comfort or qualifications—it’s about His heart and His purposes. Like Isaiah, may we be so attuned to God that when His voice calls, our answer is immediate and full of trust: “Here am I. Send me.”
